Towards Effective Teaching
Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Matthew 28: 19-20
Jesus gave His disciples their Great Commission at the end of the Gospel of Matthew. It is a call to all Christians to help people become followers of Jesus and to live a Christian life modelled on Christian principles. To do this Christians are required to teach.
Teaching is not something that comes naturally to many people. It is an art to be learnt. Whether as church leader, or simply as a committed Christian we will all become more effective if we take time to learn and continue learning to be able to teach more effectively. What better way than to learn from Jesus whose teachings have transformed millions of lives and continue to transform our world.
Drawing on examples from the Gospels , this short book looks at some of the methods Jesus used in teaching his disciples his spiritual truths. It shows how he captivated the imaginations of those listening, how he instilled them with God’s truths and equipped them to do His work. Examples are given of him preaching, , giving a demonstration, using a case-study, setting a project and mentoring his followers.
Teaching is not just about technique. It is about who you are. Drawing on Jesus we look at the qualities required to be an effective Christian teacher. This book is written for those who wish to become better teachers as well as those who are interested in catching a glimpse of the techniques Jesus used.
